What is IMWAH?

IMWAH stands for the Immigrant Migrant Women’s Association of Halifax. We support immigrant and migrant women in Nova Scotia through community programs, information, connection, and support.

Who can join IMWAH programs?

Our programs are mainly for immigrant & migrant women in Nova Scotia. You can join our programs no matter your immigration status.

What does “immigrant and migrant women” mean?

At IMWAH, we use “immigrant and migrant women” to include women who have moved to Canada from another country, including newcomers, refugees, migrant workers, international students, permanent residents, temporary residents, and women with different immigration experiences.

Are IMWAH spaces for women only?

Yes. IMWAH’s community spaces are for women and women-identifying people. This helps us create safer and more supportive spaces for participants.

Do I need to speak perfect English to join?

No. You do not need to speak perfect English. Many of our programs are beginner and intermediate English friendly. We try to use clear language and create spaces where everyone can participate in a way that feels comfortable.

What are the English Conversation Groups?

Our English Conversation Groups are welcoming spaces where immigrant and migrant women can practice English, meet other women, and build community. You do not need perfect English to join. The groups are about connection, confidence, and learning together.

Are IMWAH programs free?

Most of our community programs and events are free. If there is a cost for a specific event, we will clearly share that information before you register.

Do I need to share my personal story?

No. You never have to share personal information or personal experiences if you do not want to. You can listen, participate, ask questions, or simply be present.

Is IMWAH a crisis service?

No. IMWAH is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911. If you need help finding community or government services, you can call 211.

Can IMWAH help me with immigration applications?

IMWAH can share general information and connect you with resources, but we do not provide legal advice or immigration consulting. For immigration or legal questions, we may refer you to qualified organizations or professionals.

Can IMWAH help me if I am experiencing violence or abuse?

IMWAH can offer information, support, and referrals to trusted community services. We are not an emergency service, but we can help you understand possible options and connect with organizations that may be able to support you.

Can I bring my children to events?

Most IMWAH events are child-friendly, and we do our best to make our spaces welcoming for women with children.Some events may be 18+ only, especially if we are talking about sensitive topics. We will always share this information clearly before the event. When you register, we may ask if you need childcare or if you plan to bring children.

Where do IMWAH events happen?

IMWAH offers programs both in person and online. Many of our in-person events take place in Halifax, and we also offer virtual programs so women can join from different communities across Nova Scotia.

How can I volunteer with IMWAH?

You can complete our volunteer intake form on the Volunteer page. We review volunteer forms regularly and contact people when there is a suitable opportunity.
