Our Story

History

The Immigrant Migrant Women’s Association of Halifax (IMWAH) was founded by immigrant and migrant women who came together through the Women’s Action Coalition of Nova Scotia and the ISANS Immigrant Women’s Leadership Training. Since 2012, IMWAH has grown from a grassroots initiative into a trusted community organization that supports immigrant and migrant women in Nova Scotia through advocacy, programs, partnerships, and community-building.

Over the years, IMWAH has helped create spaces where women can connect, share knowledge, build confidence, and access support. Our work has included public education, community initiatives, advocacy, and collaboration with organizations and government partners across the province. IMWAH has also contributed to broader conversations on gender equality, anti-racism, accessibility, community safety, and immigrant women’s wellbeing.

Today, IMWAH continues to build on that foundation by creating welcoming and culturally responsive spaces where women can find information, support one another, and strengthen a sense of belonging in Nova Scotia. This direction reflects IMWAH’s continued commitment to community connection, inclusive programming, stronger partnerships, and accessible information for immigrant and migrant women.

Who We Are

IMWAH is a culturally diverse, feminist non-profit organization based in Nova Scotia. We are rooted in community and guided by the belief that immigrant and migrant women deserve safety, dignity, belonging, and opportunities to thrive.

We respond to the unique strengths, needs, and challenges of immigrant and migrant women through advocacy, inclusive programming, information-sharing, and community connection. Our work supports women in building confidence, accessing resources, strengthening relationships, and finding spaces where they feel welcomed, heard, and supported.

IMWAH works across communities and sectors to help reduce barriers, amplify women’s voices, and create more inclusive systems and environments. We also collaborate with service providers, community partners, and institutions to share knowledge and strengthen support for immigrant and migrant women across Nova Scotia.
